Zinc selenide is a yellow and transparent polycrystalline material with crystalline particle sizes approximately 70μm. It has a high transmittance in the 0.5-15 μm band and is commonly used in thermal imaging, infrared temperature measurement, medical systems, and industrial thermal radiation, among other applications.
It is the best optical material in CO2 laser systems with a low absorption coefficient of high-power zinc selenide and a high tolerance to thermal shock. The hardness is only two-thirds of that of multispectral grade ZnS. The material is relatively soft and prone to scratches. Moreover, the refractive index of the material is relatively high. Therefore, a high-hardness anti-reflection film needs to be coated on its surface for protection and to achieve a higher transmittance. Within its commonly used spectral range, the scattering is very low. When used as high-power laser devices, it is necessary to strictly control the absorption of materials and internal structural defects, and adopt polishing techniques with the least damage and coating processes with the highest optical quality.
